Latest on Historically Designating Joseph Warren’s Family Homestead in Roxbury

in about Warren

Join historically minded Roxbury residents wanting to save the Warren homestead by signing their petition here.

Recall that this location is the birthplace and childhood home of the Warren family, including Revolutionary War hero Dr. Joseph Warren (1741-1775) and his youngest brother and prominent physician Dr. John Warren (1753-1815). Their mother Mary Stevens Warren lived here throughout her married life and widowhood. Generations of the Warren family perfected the first successful apple variety, the Warren or Roxbury Russet, here in the orchards of their farm. This place enshrines not only the Warren family’s life in Roxbury but also that of two enslaved household members who labored alongside the Warrens during Colonial times.

The current structure was built in the 1840s as a unique habitable monument reminding both residents and visitors of a notable family and a past agricultural way of life in Roxbury. The Warren homestead building has never been historically certified. Prior entries here and here on drjosephwarren.com details efforts to protect the current structure by way of historical designation.

Curiously, and threateningly to people valuing the City’s, State’s, and Nation’s past, the Warren homestead has never been historically certified. It could easily become the next parking lot, 7-11, or generic office building as the Dudley Square neighborhood redevelops in a distinctly commercial fashion.
